How many of your patients are athletes and/or outdoor enthusiasts? How many times has a patient complained about the challenges they have faced in an environment described as “constantly changing.” Perhaps they are playing golf and as the day progresses, the greens look altered. Or you have a patient who plays hockey and they struggle in certain arenas due to poor lighting.

Dealing with changing environmental conditions is nothing new for athletes. Whether it is weather-related or other environmental factors (i.e., sunset or sunrise), athletes need to be equipped with the right frames and lenses.

Let’s be honest. No one wants to carry multiple pairs of glasses around with them, particularly when it comes time to play or participate in sports. It’s inconvenient and annoying. Especially when you have to stop in the middle of a game or a run to switch frames because the environment conditions are starting to change.

There are several instances that point to athletes facing changing light and/or environments visually that have an impact on their game. Christopher Smith, a PGA Pro Instructor gives the example of what happens when playing a round of golf.

“A typical round of golf can take 4-5 hours with conditions that can change drastically from overcast to sunny. It’s tedious to carry around 4 pairs of eyewear.”

Dr. Brian Rast, OD adds,

“From a lighting standpoint, an ex-NHL goalie had a lot of trouble in certain areas on the ice due to poor light. He tried different tinted contact lenses and tinting and played around with the shields in his helmet to some success. But as someone who traveled a lot and already with a tons of gear, he wanted to consolidate as much as he could.”

And with nearly half of all Americans participating in at least one outdoor activity (*The Outdoor Foundation), Sport Protective Eyewear has become essential. Patients shouldn’t have to compromise on convenience in order to get the frames they want.

Switch is a great solution because it provides people with one frame and multiple lenses. The Switch Interchangeable Lens System was developed with athletes and active adults in mind and gives them the opportunity to create their own pair of sunglasses.

As, Dr. Alan Reichow, OD, MEd, FAAO, Liberty Sport Research & Education Associate states,

“Athletic performance begins with vision and polarized lenses are a great everyday solution.”
